San Cristóbal Island is the oldest island in the Galapagos Archipelago and one of its most historically significant. As the location of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno — the provincial capital of the Galapagos — San Cristóbal Island tours offer a unique mix of wildlife encounters, dramatic volcanic landscapes, and authentic island culture that few visitors expect. This is where Charles Darwin first set foot in the Galapagos in September 1835, and the island's biodiversity has captivated naturalists ever since.
San Cristóbal is home to one of the largest sea lion colonies in the Galapagos. At La Lobería, just 2 km from town, hundreds of sea lions haul out on volcanic rocks alongside marine iguanas, red-footed boobies, and Galapagos shearwaters. The beach is also an excellent snorkeling spot — sea lions will swim around you in the water, often less than a meter away.
Offshore, Kicker Rock (León Dormido) is one of the most dramatic dive and snorkel sites in the Pacific. This sheer 150-meter volcanic tuff formation rises from the sea like a sleeping lion and teems with marine life: hammerhead sharks, Galapagos sharks, sea turtles, manta rays, and massive schools of tropical fish navigate the narrow channel between the two rock faces. It is one of the top 10 dive sites in the world.
San Cristóbal is excellent year-round. During the warm season (January–May), seas are calm and water temperatures are ideal for snorkeling at Kicker Rock and La Lobería — expect water temperatures of 22–25°C and strong underwater visibility. The cool Garúa season (June–December) brings strong currents that attract hammerhead sharks and other pelagic species to Kicker Rock, making it the prime season for diving enthusiasts.
San Cristóbal can easily be combined with other islands: explore our Santa Cruz tours or discover the volcanic wonders of Isabela Island. View all available Galapagos tours to build your perfect itinerary.
Kicker Rock (León Dormido) is a dramatic volcanic formation rising 150 meters above the ocean surface, located about 1.5 hours by boat from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. The narrow channel between the two rock faces is home to hammerhead sharks, sea turtles, manta rays, Galapagos sharks, and hundreds of tropical fish species. It is widely considered one of the world's top 10 snorkeling and diving sites.
Yes, several San Cristóbal tours are suitable for non-swimmers. The Interpretation Center, La Galapaguera tortoise center, Punta Pitt bird-watching hike, and Cerro Brujo beach are all land-based activities with no swimming required. For water tours like Kicker Rock, life jackets and wetsuits are always provided, and our guides offer full safety briefings before entering the water.
San Cristóbal has its own airport (SCY) with daily direct flights from Quito (approx. 2.5 hours) and Guayaquil (approx. 1.5 hours) operated by LATAM and Avianca. Alternatively, you can fly into Baltra and take the inter-island speedboat ferry to San Cristóbal (3.5–4 hours). Galaapp can assist with inter-island transfers as part of your multi-island tour package.
San Cristobal Island tours deliver some of the most dramatic wildlife encounters in the Galapagos. The oldest island in the archipelago is where Charles Darwin first landed in 1835. Today it is home to the iconic Kicker Rock (León Dormido) — one of the world’s top 10 dive and snorkel sites — and some of the largest sea lion colonies in the Pacific.
