Punta Suárez — The World’s Only Waved Albatross Colony
The Waved Albatross (Phoebastria irrorata) is one of the most magnificent seabirds on Earth — with a wingspan of up to 2.4 meters, it soars over the open Pacific for most of the year. But from April to December, virtually the entire global population of this endangered species (approximately 25,000 breeding pairs) returns to a single place on Earth to nest: the lava plateau at Punta Suárez. Walking the 2 km trail (a moderate hike of roughly 2.5 hours over rocky, uneven terrain — closed-toe shoes recommended), you’ll pass colonies of Nazca boobies, blue-footed boobies, and land birds such as the Galápagos hawk, finches, and Galápagos doves, before reaching the cliffside where the ocean forces seawater up to 20 meters into the air through a natural blowhole — one of the most dramatic sights in the archipelago.
Española Marine Iguanas — The Most Colorful in the Galápagos
The Española subspecies of marine iguana (Amblyrhynchus cristatus venustissimus) is the most visually striking of all Galápagos marine iguanas. During the breeding season, the males develop vivid patterns of deep red, green, and black — earning them the nickname “Christmas iguanas.” At Punta Suárez, large aggregations of these colorful lizards bask on the coastal lava, and during low tide they can be observed foraging for algae in the tidal pools. This endemic subspecies exists nowhere else on Earth.
Gardner Bay — A Beach Beyond Compare
Gardner Bay on Española’s northeastern coast is consistently ranked among the finest beaches in the Galápagos — and one of the most beautiful in the world. The beach stretches approximately 1.5 km in a perfect arc of white coral sand against water that shifts from turquoise to deep blue as the depth increases. A resident colony of Galápagos sea lions occupies both ends of the beach. Here you’ll enjoy roughly one hour of snorkeling at Gardner Islet, with encounters with sea lions, sea turtles, eagle rays, reef sharks, and a rich variety of fish, plus lunch served on board with stunning views of the bay.

Every departure includes the Waved Albatross colony, but we offer two route options depending on the day and tides:

Duration: Full day, approximately 8–9 hours. Departs Puerto Baquerizo Moreno around 7:00–7:30 AM, returns approximately 5:00 PM.
Inter-island navigation: About 2.5 hours each way from December to June, and around 3 hours 15 minutes each way from July to November, depending on sea conditions.
Difficulty: Moderate. The Punta Suárez trail (approximately 2 km, ~2.5 hours) involves walking on uneven, rocky lava terrain — closed-toe shoes recommended. Gardner Bay is flat beach walking with optional snorkeling (~1 hour).
Best season: April–December for the Waved Albatross. Year-round for marine iguanas, beach time, and snorkeling. Sea turtle nesting December–May at Gardner Bay.
Weather: From January to April, expect 23–25°C; from May to December, 17–21°C — a light wetsuit or rash guard is recommended for snorkeling year-round.
