Kicker Rock & Beach Tour: San Cristóbal’s most iconic snorkeling adventure

The Kicker Rock tour is the most popular day activity on San Cristóbal Island, and for good reason. Kicker Rock, known in Spanish as León Dormido, is a stunning two-pinnacle rock formation that rises 148 meters straight out of the Pacific Ocean, about 24 km northwest of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. The narrow channel between the two columns is one of the best snorkeling and diving spots in the entire Galápagos archipelago, combining strong upwelling currents with extraordinary marine biodiversity in crystal-clear water.

Snorkeling the channel at Kicker Rock

The channel between the two rock columns is about 50 meters wide and creates an ideal natural setting for drift snorkeling: the current slowly carries you through the passage while you look down into the deep blue water. The rock walls on both sides are covered in corals and encrusting organisms, home to moray eels, lobsters and small reef fish. In the open water of the channel you will find the species that make Kicker Rock legendary:

• Galápagos sharks: present all year round, usually seen in large numbers
• Scalloped hammerhead sharks: gather in groups during the cool season (June–November)
• Pacific green sea turtles: feeding on algae along the rock walls
• Golden cownose rays: swimming in formation through the channel
• Eagle rays: gliding effortlessly through the currents
• Blue-footed boobies: nesting on the ledges and plunge-diving for fish above you
• Nazca boobies: nesting on the steep rock walls

Afternoon: Galápagos beach and sea lions

After your Kicker Rock adventure, the tour continues to one of San Cristóbal’s most beautiful beaches for a relaxing afternoon. Galápagos sea lions are famous for their calm attitude toward visitors: pups often come up to you on the sand and swim playfully beside you in the shallows. It is the perfect complement to the intense Kicker Rock experience: exciting underwater encounters in the morning and pure island relaxation in the afternoon.

• Water temperature: 18–24 °C depending on the season (23–25 °C Jan–Apr, 17–21 °C May–Dec). Wetsuits are provided and strongly recommended.
• Best season: year-round, although June to November offers the best chance of hammerhead sightings and the best visibility.
• Protection status: uninhabited site within the Galápagos Marine Reserve; visits are only allowed with a certified naturalist guide.
